Guacamayas are as emblematic in Mexico as bald eagles are in the United States. Can you imagine Mexico without the guacamayas (Military Macaw)? Well, neither can Bob Price, founder of the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens, or any of the other members of the newly formed conservation group Guacamayas Siempre (Guacamayas Forever).
It has been estimated that there are currently only about 10,000 breeding pairs of guacamayas in Mexico, whereas in the 1980s there were an estimated 100,000 pairs. The main cause of the decline is poachers robbing the babies from their nests to sell as pets. However, the California condor was saved from extinction in the ele venth hour because a few people cared enough to initiate their despe rate conservation mission. Guacamayas Siempre belie ves they can do the same for their beloved bi rd.

Las guacamayas (Ara militaris) son tan emblemáticas para
México como el águila calva lo es para los Estados Uni-
dos. ¿Podrías imaginar México sin guacamayas? Bob Price,
fundador de los Jardines Botánicos de Puerto Vallarta, al igual
que cualquiera de los miembros del recién formado grupo de
conservación Guacamayas Siempre tampoco quieren imaginarlo.
Se estima que actualmente sólo hay unos 10,000 pares de guacamayas en estado reproductivo en México, mientras que en los ochentas este número se calculaba en 100,000 pares. La causa principal de esta disminución son los saqueadores ilegales que roban bebés de sus nidos para venderlos como mascotas. Sin embargo, el cóndor de California fue salvado de la extinción en el último momento porque unas cuan-tas personas se preocuparon lo suficiente para iniciar una desesperada misión de conservación. Guacamayas Siempre confía que puede hacer lo mismo por su adorada ave.
Este grupo se reúne mensualmente en los Jardines Botánicos
y desesperadamente solicita voluntarios y fondos para hacer
que el proyecto realmente despegue. Hay iniciativas para
construir un sitio Web y reunir fondos, pero cualquier tipo
